Besides helping in developing concepts for the Action Space SchwarmStoff – who do we become, when we lean onto each other that will be elaborated and delivered by and within the artists and the community of Freimann and giving a public lecture, the outcome of their research will be two critical theoretical essays for Der Fahrende Raum. Jelena will reflect on the pedagogical and education practice of experimental art platforms in Socialist Yugoslavia, built on the ideas of self-management and democratization of culture. Vlidi aims to examine the role of art in the process of education and cognition by connecting it with his ongoing research of historical transformations of the perception of the ideas of utopia, dystopia and heterotopia. These phenomena are observed in parallel with the technological development of transforming the world and the society into digital and networked form, blurring the distinction between what were the exclusive domains of natural sciences and humanistics.

Jelena and Vlidi hope to leave to Der Fahrende Raum a modest theoretical and speculative contribution that may be of help in contemplating and organizing their self-organized educational efforts within the community of Freimann and beyond.

Jelena Vesić (Belgrade) is an independent curator, writer, editor, and lecturer. She is a co-founder of Prelom Kolektiv and co-editor of Red Thread Journal for social theory, contemporary art and activism. She authored the numerous essays examining the relations between art and ideology in the fields of geopolitical art history writing, experimental art, and exhibition practices. Her recent book On Neutrality, The letter from Melos (with Vladimir Jeric Vlidi and Rachel O’Reilly, 2016) is part of the Non-Aligned Modernity edition of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Belgrade. Vesić also curated, among other projects, the exhibition Lecture Performance (MOCAB / Kölnischer Kunstverein, 2009), and Political Practices of (post-) Yugoslav Art, the collective exhibition project which critically examined art historical concepts and narratives on Yugoslav art after the dissolution of Yugoslavia (Museum of Yugoslavia, 2012). Her most recent exhibition is Story on Copy (Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart, 2017). In 2016/2017, she was the researcher and Goethe Institute fellow at Haus der Kunst, Munich, working on the topic “Postcolonial: 1955-1980”. Jelena Vesić holds a PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Arts, Belgrade.

 

Vladimir Jerić Vlidi (Belgrad) arbeitet als Medienwissenschaftler, Verleger und Autor mit verschiedenartigen lokalen und internationalen kulturellen Initiativen zusammen. Angefangen 1988 als Musiker und Mitgründer der Band Darkwood Dub startete er und wurde er Teil von zahlreichen künstlerischen und aktivistischen Gruppen, Kollektiven und Organisationen (unter anderem, Prelom Kolektiv, TEDx Belgrade, Druga Scena, Slobodna Kultura, Creative Commons Serbia). Er ist Mitglied der Redaktion von Red Thread, dem Journal für soziale Theorie, Gegenwartskunst und Aktivismus und ist Web Redakteur für Reconstruction Women’s Fund zudem publizierte er zahlreiche unabhängige Projekte. Als technischer Direktor betreute er mehrere zeitgenössische Kunstausstellungen (z.B. Radiodays, No more Reality series, Polical Practices of (post-)Yugoslav Art). In seiner gegenwärtigen Arbeit erforscht und produziert er kritische Texte und Übersetzungen aus den Bereichen der Medientheorie, sozialen Theorie und künstlerischen Praxis.
